Winter

Winter Greetings!
Yet the temperature is very cold and sun is dormant,
we already started having many requests for the cherry blossom season.
I recently found a good and detailed website shows you when they might bloom in Japanese and English .
Everyone in Japan is waiting for this moment when the sky will be colored pink.

Still, there are many beautiful flowers are blooming in Kyoto now .
Senryo manryo, Nanten, Sazanka,Tsubaki,,those flowers which bloom in a silent season, leave some kind of rememberance like a pledge .

When you look up the North East of imperial palace , there is a Mount Hiei standing with wearing white hat.
And Full moon plum"mangetsu roubai" started bloom with gorgeous and unforgetable scent.
Here and there, plums are starting to bloom in Kitano-tenman-gu shrine.

Yet the snow falls and
my finger is frozen here in Kyoto.
But if you strain to hear,
you can hear the breath of coming spring.

Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!!

Kanpai!! Happy New year 2009!

At the end of the December,

we had year over soba(buckwheat noodle) to wish next year to be narrow but long and happy.

We offered guests Toshikoshi-soba noodles.

Some of our guest went out for countdown parties, some to the temples to ring the bell, some to the shrines to pray.

There are loads of people comes to Kyoto for the New year's day because of the lots of main shrines and temples of important sects in Japan are in Kyoto.

One of them is Fushimi-inari-shrine and the other one is Yasaka-shrine.

People to come to Fushismi-inari-shrine to pray for success on their business.

I tried to go to Yasaka-shrine with my friend but it was overly packed so we ended up going to a tiny shrine in the middle of the Gion

We also played Japanese Archly (kyu-do).

Sadly, non of my allow have hit the target which means there is no good fortune for the New year?!

Oh Whatever , We were happy still and kept on laughing.

I like this crowded atmosphere of New year’s morning (after the midnight).

Many people are still out on the street,in this late.

Everybody is smiling ,talking and singing with white breath and be full filled with hope for the New Years wish.

If there is something equal in the life.

That could be the time, time we are given to start new year even if the past year was not treating you kind.

For the New Year day, Shogo-sensei(one of our staff) gave practice on calligraphy to our guest.

This is also a tradition of Japan to write the ambition for the New year.

Shogo-sensei!

On those 3nights from the 1st of January ,if you ever dreamed of Mt.Fuji, Eagle or the egg plant , that is a good sign ! Your 2009 become good year.

(But I wonder who could dream about egg plant on the New years day??!!)

Every family prepare special, food for Oshougatsu(New year).

It’s called Osechi, Ozouni.

Osechi is so much varieties of foods which last at least 3days.

In those days, all the shops were closed for many days from the 1st of January, so the mother had to be ready for it and also for that they can rest better.

Oshougatsu-food at my friend's family .

We eat Ozouni, rice dumpling cake

with hot soup.(mochi(rice cake) making is also one of the important event around new year).

We had Ozouni and New Year Sake with our guests.

It was so much pleasure to see their smile .

Ozouni are different in every region.

This is special one from Nagasaki.

They put unique shape fish cake and baked fish.

Yammiiiiiee.

Now winter holiday is almost over ,yet the good atmosphere is remained in our heart.

There will be some special winter ceremonies and events will be held in Kyoto.

Please visit Kyoto in a peaceful winter time.

BEST WISHES! Reina

The first (non)sunrise of the year

In the list of events I introduced to enjoy the new year in and around Osaka I finally decided to go to the Mount Kongo to see the first sunrise of 2009.

Woke up at half past midnight, I had a long way from Kyoto to the mountain. Trains were running all the night but with low frequency, so I had to be perfectly synchronized in order to catch the connections between 3 trains, 1 subway and 1 ropeway !

When I reached the last station before the ropeway in Gose city I've surprised to see two others foreign people. While getting out from the station they came to me and asked if I knew the direction to the ropeway, then we started walking together. We soon realized that we were all French, and even more surprising they were actually customers staying at J-Hoppers Osaka. They have read the information on the board and decided to come. I was very pleased about that !

Up to the ropeway station there was almost one hour walking. It started soon to rain and the road was steeper and darker as we were getting out of the city. Also the rain turned to melted snow just before we reached the station.

After 6 minutes suspended inside the complete darkness, the white and pure snow welcome us at the entrance of the hiking course to the summit.

It was so beautifull !!

A little temple to pray the Kami of the snow and prevent bad luck from what will follow ;-)

And we continued deeper and deeper in the woods and the darkness ... Hiking by night is quite an experience ! :-)

Near to the top (actually not so far) a big refuge with restaurant serving udon, soba, donburi, karaage, ... It looked good and there was still time until the sun rises so why not having a bit ! Everybody gathered inside this warm paradise.

Then we get out again to climb the few meters left and wait on the top of Mount Kongo. It was so windy there, I was literally pushed out of the way ! And so slippery and so cold and so foggy !!

But we perseverated and all stayed there looking impatiently to the east ... and ... and ... and ... nothing ! The fog was so dense and the snow storm so heavy we couldn't see nothing at all :-(

Then one gave up and all the others followed. At least we had some others beautifull landscapes when it got brighter.

It was a little bit disappointing of course but as a strange experience I don't regret it at all. And a small hike always make me feel better, so that's a good way to start the year isn't it ? :-)
