Visiting God of literature ~太宰府(Dazaifu)~

Hi, guys. This is Nana from Fukuoka Hana Hostel.

Spring is almost there!
My nose can feel that pollens are everywhere. I had runny nose and stuffed nose till I went to see my doctor till day before yesterday...

Spring is also the time of graduation and enrollment of school.
Students who are expecting to graduate study hard to pass entrance exams. One of the things those students do is to visit shrine that enshrine God of literature.

In Fukuoka, there is one of the famous shrines that enshrines god of literature which is Dazaifu Tenmangu. During New year holidays, about 2 million people visit the shrine from all over Japan.

Student who will take exams visit this shrine and pray for passing their entrance exams.

This time of the year, you can see flower of plums at the shrine. There are 6,000 plum trees of 197 varieties in the vicinity of shrine.

When I visited Dazaifu Tenmangu early this month, I saw little snow on top of main shrine.
It was so cold and quite but the nature around the shrine was so beautiful!

If you have chance to come Fukuoka, you should visit Dazaifu Tenmangu  and pray for your life success!

Hi there!

It's getting warmer and the spring is coming.
I can't wait!!

But I went to Hokkaido for snowboarding and enjoyed winter so much!

We have many guests going to "Niseko" for snowboarding at J-hoppers and I found so many foreigners there.
It was completely like out side of Japan.

When I was walking a street, I found a cool place!

It is ICE BAR.

Everything in there is so stylish and so cool.

If you have a chance to visit to Niseko, you should go there!!

Beyond the border

The weather is sunny, warm, and beautiful these days.
Finally, spring is around the corner in Hiroshima!!

Therefore, it's time to wake up from hibernation!!
Woo Hoo!

So I determined to work out more often and I jogged with my dog by the sea last weekend.
Jogging + listening to my favorite music + sweating in the sun was a great way to let off steam!

But, whenever I look up the sky or see the horizon, I recall all the people I met through my travel in overseas.
I've been to Australia, China, U.S.A, and have hitchhiked in 27 countries in Europe.

Long time ago, there was no internet and I believe that writing letters or international phone calls are the only way to keep in touch with friends live abroad.

However, the internet was invented and some useful social networking sites like Facebook or Line are available for us lately.
They are even for free and it made us easier to communicate all over the world.

What I'm trying to say is... Since the internet is distributed widely throughout the world and is inextricably linked to our lives, I can get opportunities to see my foreign friends again much easier.

Some of my friends actually came and stayed at Hiroshima Hana Hostel where I work and we had a great time.
And this March, my friends from Poland are visiting me!!
They showed me around in Poland and it's my turn to host them in Hiroshima!

Thanks to the Internet but I'd rather see my friends in person and am so looking forward to seeing them!!

Yay! :)

Polar Bear Hot-pot

Do you know Japanese Hot-pot which is popular food for winter in Japan?
Hot-pot makes us warm and healthy because we put many vegetables in it.
And we normally eat with family or friends, so it makes our hearts warm as well.
I love eating hot-pot in winter!

These days, it's getting popular to cook "interesting Hot-pot" in Japan.
Many people are trying to cook animal or cute character's hot-pot.
It's very trendy!
So my friends and I tried to cook "Polar Bear Hot-pot".
The pictures are as below,

The basement was made of Napa cabbage and pork.

Can you guess what we used for Polar bear?
The answer is... Japanese radish!!
We grated one and half radish and made Polar bear like clay play.
And we cut sea weed for his eyes and nose.
He is very cute, isn't he?

Then we poured its soup and wait!

The soup is boiling now!
He looks like in Hot spring!
Good for winter, right?

We waited for 15 min, but he didn't get out of shape.
So we could not eat because he still too cute...

Finally we gave up for waiting , said "sorry" to the Polar bear and started eating!

This is the best Hot-pot I have ever had!
It looked very simple, but the Japanese radish makes the soup very sweet.
Good job, Polar bear! You tried very hard!

I am planning to cook "Snoopy" Hot-pot next time!
Who would like to join me??

Hida no Sato light-up

Do you know "Hida no Sato or Hida folk village" in Takayama?

Hida no Sato, the Hida folk village, is a place to visit when you are in Takayama. More than 30 traditional buildings including thatched and shingled houses, shrines, sheds, and others are scattered around the hill. All could be entered and explored as you like. An elegant swan welcomes everyone at Goami Pond which is really attractive every season.

It's a museum that you can see same buildings as Shirakawago(UNESCO world heritage site).
They held Light-up event every day until Feb 28th.
Normally the entrance fee is 700 yen, but it's only 300 yen for it.

And the bus fee going there is 200 yen for one-way.

If you couldn't get the bus ticket for Shirakawago light-up event or you feel too expensive to go to Shirakawgo light-up event, we absolutely recommend this opportunity!

"Hida no Sato" is not UNESCO world heritage site, but I think you can feel same atmosphere as Shirakawago!

Thank you letters!

Hi, good morning!
Thanks to you, we are almost fully booked in Sakura season!
Can't wait to have spring season here!!

The guests stayed our hostel left messages sometimes.. :)
Their messages are very lovely....!They make us more happy.

We get pictures, mags, sometimes flowers!
I am impressed some travelers bring souvenirs for others.
They love their own country and kind for others..!

We really love to talk to them!
Thank you very much !!

- Life is like a box of chocolates. You'll never know what you're gonna get.

- This life is like a journey. And that's a one-way ticket traveling. There's always outward journey but not return one.

- Traveling sucks. You lose money, career and yourself.
                                                                             by Me

Yes, traveling sucks, ninety-nine times out of a hundred. Just same as our lives. We pay ridiculous expensive tax, kiss the blarney stone to our neighbors, raise our kids and they say ' Don't wash your underwear with my favorite T-Shirts' to you.
But, when you come across something special - for instance, lifetime best friends, things you can go crazy about and so on, you will feel ' I love my life'.
That's same as traveling.
And for me, when I stumble across the amazing hotel, my trip is going to be unforgettable.

Recently I had a chance to stay that kind of hotel, 1967 City Central Hotel in Tainan, Taiwan.

It locates just 5 minutes away from Tainan rail station however the building is hidden place so I felt I was in a intimate space. Also their each one of furniture designs are astonishing. I wish I could live this place for the rest of my life!

And, here is another hotel I would love to stay in near future. I just drop some photos in case someone will take me to there.

Wythe Hotel (New York City)

 Isn't it amazing?

New Member TOMOMI

Hello it's Kana from Hiroshima Hana Hostel.

Was warm about a week ago but all of a sudden got really cold in here and started snowing...
HELLO SUN. Please come out don't be shy!! And please warm me up....

Let me introduce our new member today.

"Tomomi" She is new from this Feb. She used to live in South Korea for 1 and half years and just came back to Japan this Jan. She speaks Japanese of course, English and Korean. Even though she just came back, she works very hard and also quick learner!!! I really enjoy working with her. She reminds me when I was new.

I wasn't as hard worker as her, wasn't as quick learner as her, but what I can remember is how hard it was to get used to the new job. Everything seemed like super difficult for me. I always worried that whether I could be like other receptionist or not. Everyday was filled with anxiousness.

Now  this is my 4th year...Time flies....I am still not confidence enough to be as a receptionist like others, but I really love my job and colleague. I really enjoy working here. I hope she will feel same way as mine one day.

Good luck Tomomi!! You are doing really good and we are always here to support you!

My puppy, Hana san (dachshund)!

I just want to introduce my puppy dog, Hana, as she is so cute and has good characteristics!

She was born in December 2nd, 2012 in Shizuoka and became our family 1 year ago.
She is a wee bit small, but a good watchdog to protect our family (like barking at some stranger!).

She was 6 months old...
She is now 1 years old and often takes a nap in the living room...
She likes playing with a ball. So, I often go to the park near Katsura-gawa River with her.
She also likes chasing anything we throw such as a harness, newspaper, a Frisbee and so on...
I like animals like dogs and cats, so if you have any pet, please let me know and let's talk together!!

What's going on at Hiroshima Hana Hostel these days?

Hi this is Hayateru from Hiroshima Hana Hostel.

These days Hiroshima is extremely cold and I feel less going out. But one sunny day I went to golf practice for my second time in my life. All balls I shot flew to the right and still have air shots. I hope to debut on course this year. I will keep practicing with Tom-san.

Last year we were awarded Certificate of Excellence 2013 on Trip Advisor.
Our staff Yujiro was especially happy about this! lol
We have not had free accommodation staff since last October(Yori-chan from Taiwan), but one guy from Kumamoto called us for short term staff while his Winter break of university. His name is Yamato(a guy with Kumamon knit cap) majoring Hospitality Management at university in Kumamoto. His friendly character making Hiroshima Hana's atmosphere much better. He held a snack night a few times. He will be at Hiroshima Hana until the middle of March. We hope he enjoys his time in Hiroshima!

We bought new sofas in the living room since we had some negative feedback about living room. I hope we never have a comment as "miserable atmosphere". lol

and also beer machine is waiting for you  :)

Pork Bone!

자세히 읽어보면 뭔가 어색한 번역;;

The happiest birthday ever!

It was my happiest birthday ever, this year since I got 5 birthday party in total!
3 of them were actually at Osaka and Kyoto Hana hostel.

We had a new year party at the begging of 2014 at Osaka Hana hostel and I and Karie(from J-Hoppers Kyoto) got a lovely birthday cake as surprise!
Chocolate sponge and sweet whip cream with our name which made by cookies on it.

And then another 2 at Kyoto Hana hostel on my birthday.
I was working on the day but I fond the light at the reception was suddenly off.
Wakana who is my coworker came from back yard with a birthday cake and my coworkers were there as well.
My big boss came with a champagne for me and we made a toast.
I actually could not drink it at the time since I was on my work unfortunately but I had it after work on the day with Shiori who is our night duty staff.

Also I had another one at Kyoto Hana hostel again since we had a birthday party for staffs who were born in January at the end of the month.
I and other 2 staffs got big fancy cake with our face.

Then I actually got 2 more birthday party with my friends this year( 艸`*)!!
What a happy begging of 2014.
Thank you very much for all who cerebrated my birthday.

Feeling DJ-ish at Kyoto Hana

There is always music playing whenever you go to any reception at J-hoppers group hostels, and it happens a lot when guests get curious about the music played. Sometimes because it is something they know as well, and sometimes because it is something they like even though it is from Japanese musicians. Also, having a conversation on music is something I love for me while on work at the reception. So, our illustrator master Mio made this sign:) No music no life:) We'd love to share music with you

New face staff in Osaka Hana Hostel!

A new girl joined our Osaka Hana members in this month!
She is an idol ! Lovely, pretty and super friendly for everybody!

I have never met a girl like her! She loves Japanese cartoon and cute stuff!

She can open a maid cafe... (^^;) I love her so much! I am very excited to work with her!
